TALK about the music industry these days is fairly grim. More people may be listening to more music than ever before, but no one seems to know how to make money out of the business. However, having not read any of his other works, and given that the screenplay for Smoke was written around the same time as The Music of Chance (1990), I was wary that this too would be mawkish, sentimental, tripe. Swooping out of the shadows of rain-swept Sydney cul-de-sacs, these young mystics are about as enigmatic as their music. Existentialism is the philosophical point of hitch which argues that felicitousness can only be achieved by accepting nonpareils mortality. I have been rather vocal in my criticism of Paul Auster's recent output, a flurry of half-formed almost parodic novels that are almost disappointing enough to make you reassess his backlist and downgrade them a bit.
